Question

A certain satellite is sent to explore an exoplanet (planet outside of our solar system). The satellite enters a stable orbit around the exoplanet 45 000 km above the planet with a period of 42.0 hours. What is the mass of this planet (in kg)? A constant force of 350 N is applied to an object, which is subsequently displaced by 10.0 m under the application of this force. The total work done to the object by this force is found to be 3000 J. What is the angle (in degrees) between the force and the displacement?

Explanation / Answer

Period T = 2pi R / v

Using mv^2 / R = GM m / R^2 ( for circular orbit)

v^2 = GM / R

(2pi R / T)^2 = GM / R

R = 45 x 10^3 km = 45 x 10^6 m

T = 42 x 3600 s = 151200 s

G = 6.67 x 10^-11

by putting values and solving

M = 2.20 x 10^24 kg

--------------------------------------

Work done = F.d = |F||d| cos@

3000 = 350 x 10 x cos@

cos@ = 0.857

@ = 31 deg
