Question

Two coils are wound around the same cylindrical form, as shown in the figure (Figure 1) . When the current in the first (black) coil is decreasing at a rate of 0.248 A/s , the induced emf in the second (blue) coil has magnitude 1.67 mV .

A.What is the mutual inductance of the pair of coils?

B.If the second coil has 34.0 turns, what is the average magnetic flux through each turn when the current in the first coil equals 1.21 A ?

C.If the current in the second coil increases at a rate of 0.370 A/s , what is the magnitude of the induced emf in the first coil?

Explanation / Answer

a) Use: E = M(delta I/ delta t) => rearrange M = E/ (delta I/ delta t)=1.6*10^-3/0.248=0.00645VSEC/A

b) Use M = (N(2) (flux))/I(2)

flux=0.00645*1.21/34=2.29*10^-4 Tm^2

c) Use E = M(delta I/ delta t=0.00645*0.37=0.00238 V
