Question
Sorry there are 2 questions in this post.
A ball with a mass 0.470 kg has a velocity of 11.0 m/s as it moves toward a batter. If the ball leaves the bat moving in the opposite direction with a speed a speed of 24.0 m/s, find the impulse given the ball by the bat. (Hint: Think carefully about the sign of your answer!) kg-m/s
Two ice skaters, both with mass 76.0 kg move toward each other. Skater A has a speed of 1.70 m/s, and skater B has a speed of 4.10 m/s. If the two skaters move together after the collision, what is their speed? m/s
Explanation / Answer
1.)
Impulse = m*delta(v)
let us take direction of initial Velocity = -ve
Therefore, Vi = -11.0 m/s
Vf = 24 m/s
Impulse = m*(vf - vi)
Impulse = 0.470 * (24 - (-11)) Kg m/s
Impulse = 0.470 * 35 Kg m/s
Impulse = 16.45 Kg m/s
Impulse given the ball by the bat, = 16.45 Kg m/s
2.)
Using Momentum conservation,
m1*v1 + m2*v2 = (m1+m2)*vf
76*1.7 - 76 * 4.10 = (76 + 76 ) * vf
vf = - 1.2 m/s
Speed = 1.2 m/s in the direction of Skater b original motion.
