Question
The helicopter view in Figure P3.14 shows two people pulling on a stubborn mule. Assume that F1 is 120 N and F2 is 75 N. The forces are measured in units of newtons (N). Find the following.
(a) The single force that is equivalent to the two forces shown.The helicopter view in Figure P3.14 shows two people pulling on a stubborn mule. Assume that F1 is 120 N and F2 is 75 N. The forces are measured in units of newtons (N). Find the following.
(a) The single force that is equivalent to the two forces shown.
(b) The force that a third person would have to exert on the mule to make the net force equal to zero.

Explanation / Answer
a)
F1=115 N at an angle of 60 degrees from +ve x-axis
using the components of forces,
horizontal component F1x=120 cos60 = 60 N
vertical component F1y=120 sin60= 103.92 N
F2=75 N at an angle of 105 degrees from +ve x-axis,
F2x=75cos105 =-19.4 N, and F2y=75sin105=72.44 N
resultant force Rx = F1x+F2x = 60 -19.4 = 40.6 N
Ry =F1y+F2y = 103.92 + 72.44 = 176.36 N
magnitude R= sqrt(Rx^2+Ry^2)
R =sqrt (40.6 ^2+176.36^2) =181 N
angle (theta)=tan-1(176.36/40.6)
theta = 77.degrees from +ve x-axis

b)the force the third person would have to exert is magnitude =176.16 N
direction=(360-77) = 283 deg counter clockwise from +ve x-axis
