Question

The two blocks in the diagram below rest on frictionless inclines and are connected by a lightweight string that passes over a lightweight pulley. if m1= 3.00 kg, m2= 2.00 kg, the angle= 25 degrees, and angle = 48 degrees, find the acceleration of the blocks and the tension in the string.

Use link above for clarification on question and also for the diagram. It is number 5 on the sheet and the answer for this problem is at the bottom of the sheet as well. I just would like to see how the work is done to reach the answer that is provided.

To get full credit on problem:

1. Draw a picture and label the info, show direction of acceleration.

2. Choose object for which to draw a free body diagram.

3. Draw free body diagram for each object, and define the x and y axes.

4. Split your forces into components.

5. write out the equations and then solve.

Explanation / Answer

for m1

m1*g*sin25 - T = m1*a...............(1)

for m2

T - m2*g*sin48 = m2*a................(2)

from 1 & 2

m1*g*sin25 - m2*g*sin48 = a*(m1+m2)

(3*9.8*sin25)-(2*9.8*sin48) = a*(3+2)

a = -0.428 m/s^2

magnitude = a = 0.428 m/s^2

T = m1*g*sin25 - m1*a

T = (3*9.8*sin25)+(3*0.428)

T = 13.7 N
