Question

A scientist testing the effects of a chemical on lettuce yield, sprays a field with the chemical. A second field does not receive the chemical. The amount of lettuce harvested from each field is measured. Bottom of Form

What is the hypothesis?

What is the independent variable?

What is the dependent variable?

What is the control group?

What is the experimental group?

What are the possible standardized variables? (Hint: This is not expressly mentioned in the description so you will have to think about the experimental design.)

Explanation / Answer

Hypothesis: Effect of chemical spray on lettuce tends to increase the lettuce yield and growth than lettuce in the field without chemical spray.

The independent variable : The field size is independent variable and is same for both experimental and control fields and does not change and also the number of seeds sown in both experimental and control groups.

The dependent variable: Here, the dependent variable is amount of lettuce harvested after chemical spray in experimental group and is compared with control group which dod not receive chemical spray.

Control group: It is the lettuce group that did not receive chemical spray.

Experimental group: It is the test group that had received the chemical spray treatment.

Poissible standardized variables: These would be independent variables such as field size and number of seeds which are both same in both experimental and control groups.
