The part of the wire where the bend occurs is in a magnetic field of 0.666 T confined to the circular region of diameter 75.0 cm , as shown. Assume that I= 5.70 A and d=45.5 cm .

1) Find the direction of the net force that the magnetic field exerts on this wire.

2) Find the magnitude of the net force that the magnetic field exerts on this wire.

Explanation / Answer

In the given case, magnetic field is directed out of the page. As two horizontal parts of the wire in the circle have the same length and current is in opposite directions, the forces exerted on them by the magnetic field cancels out.

Apply right hand rule:

point your fingers in the direction of the magnetic field and your thumb in the direction of the current then palm faces to the left of the page, so the force is to the left.
