Question 10 of 13 X ncorrect X ncorrect ncorrect X ncorrect Map E R. Kesten David Tauck UNIVERSITY PHYSICS Presented by sapling learning In a ballistic pendulum experiment, a small marble is fired into a cup attached to the end of a pendulum. If the mass of the marble is 0.0265 kg and the mass of the pendulum is 0.250 kg, how high will the pendulum swing if the marble has an initial speed of 5.85 m/s? Assume that the mass of the pendulum is concentrated at its end so that linear momentum is conserved during this collision Number 1.86 There is a hint available! FIRST USE THE CONSEVATION OF MOMENTUM
INITIAL MOMENTUM = FINAL MOMENTUM
m1v1= (m1+m2) * v
where
m1= 0.0265 Kg
m2= 0.250 Kg
v1= 5.85 m/s
so solving for v we get ,
v = 0.56m/s
now,
the kinetic energy of combined mass should be converted into potential energy.
so,
0.5*(m1+m2) * v2 = ((m1+m2)* g* h
=> h= v2/2g
= >h = 0.016 m
