What mass of water at 10.0degreeC would be required to cool 50.0kg of a metal having a specific heat of 600 J/kg degree C from 90.0degreeC to 20.0degreeC?C4) A 100 kg airplane part falls into a swimming pool! The airplane part has a temperature of 200degreeC and a specific heat of 200 J/kg degree C and the pool has a temperature of 0degreeC and a mass of 10000 kg. What is the final temperature of the combination? In a calorimeter, the equilibrium temperature of copper in water is achieved. If the water is then replaced with a liquid that has the same mass and temperature but a lower specific heat, what will happen to the equilibrium temperature? Explain your choice. no change increase decreaseExplanation / Answer
C3) Heat realeased by metal by cooling from 90 degreeC to 20 degree C= Q
Q = m C deltaT
Q = 50 x 600 x (90 - 20) = 21 x 10^5 J
Heat absorbed by water as temperautre of water rises from 10 degree C to 20 degree C
specific heat capacity of water = 4186 J / kg C
Q = m x 4186 x (20 -10) = 41860m
from energy conservation,
heat absorbed = heat released
41860m = 21 x 10^5
m = 50.17 kg of water
