<This question hasn't been helped yet-- 2 answers were incorrect>
Two 1.90-kg carts on a low-friction track are rigged with magnets so that the carts repel each other when they approach each other. One cart has an initial velocity of +0.323 m/s, and the other has an initial velocity of -0.147 m/s.
a) What is the maximum energy stored in the magnetic field during the collision, assuming that the carts never touch each other? (The kinetic energy of any system can be decomposed into two parts: the translational and the convertible energy. Draw or look up in the textbook the expected dependence of the relative velocity that goes into this formula on time, during the collision.)
:
It's not* 0.12J or 0.24J-- It's NOT 1/2mv^2+1/2mv^@
Explanation / Answer
kinetic enrgy of each cart = 0.5 mv^2
here KE1 = 0.5 * 1.9 * 0.323* 0.323
KE = 0.09911 J
KE 2 = - 0.5 * 0.147 * 0.147 * 1.9
KE2 = -0.0205 J
Total KE = 0.09911 - 0.0205
KE = 0.078 J
