Question

1. A force of 10.0 N is directed upward perpendicular to the stick at Point E. What is the torque from this force?

2.A force of 20.0 N is directed downward perpendicular to the stick at Point A. What is the torque from this force?

3. A force of 33.0 N is directed upward perpendicular to the stick at Point G. What is the torque from this force?

4. A force of 25.0 N is directed upward at angle 31.8° to the right of the perpendicular to the stick at Point K. What is the torque from this force?

5. A force of 20.0 N is applying horizontally to the right at K. What is the torque from this force?

6. Two forces are applied simultaneously to the stick. A force of 10.0 N is directed upward perpendicular to the stick at Point E and a force of 33.0 N is directed upward perpendicular to the stick at Point G. What is the net torque from these two forces?

Explanation / Answer

1) TORQUE T = r X F

r is the distance from the axis of rotation to the point of application of the force

F is the force acting

T = r*F*sin(theta)

theta is the angle between r and F

1) F = 10 N

r = 5*17.3 = 0.865 m

then Torque T = 0.865*10 = 8.65 N-m (CCW) So T is positive

2) F = 20 N

r = 3*0.173 = 3.46 m

then T = 3.46*20=69.2 N-m

T is negative

So T = -69.2 N-m

3) T = 7*0.173*33 = 39.963 N-m

4) T = 2*0.173*25*cos(31.8) = 7.35 N-m

5) T = 0 N-m

6) add the answers of 1) and (3)

Tnet = 39.963+8.65 = 48.613 N-m
