Question

lhfdt PHY 145 Fall 2015 ) https:/ 5 ma You want to visit your friend in Chicago and decide to take the train, Unfortunately, you are late getting to the train station. You are 15 Train catch (coaches) https://phy-coaches.cst.cmich.edu/student/kine.html take the train. Unlortunately, you are late getting to the train station. You are running as fast as you can, but the accelerates at a constant rate of a" 1.0 m/s,inLe50 0 m you train begins to pull out while you are still d= 300 m away You are runningat v= 80m/s and the tran wil reach the end of the station platform. Can you catch up to your train? I yes, at which distance from your r initial positon do you catch the train? t Part A by se C Value Units Submit Continue 29 29 30 Hw4

Explanation / Answer

Time taken to reach the platform.

t1 = d/v =30 / 8 = 3.75 sec.

and after that you will require more t sec to catch train as train is left by

S = ut + at^2 /2 = 0 + 1 x 3.75^2 /2 = 7.03 m

in time t , u have to travel (d1 + 7.03 ) if train run d1 distance in time t.

so , d1 = (3.75 x 1)t + 1t^2 /2

d1 = 3.75t + 0.5t^2

hence, 8t = 3.75t + 0.5t^2 + 7.03

0.5t^2 - 4.25t + 7.03 = 0

t = 2.25 sec, 6.25 sec

In 2.25 sec,

Total distance = 8 x 2.25 = 18m

So yes he will catch the train when train has tarveled 18m .
