Question
I need both questions answered please 4. Provide a possible experimental design to determine if light intensity affects the rate of photosynthesis in plants. Be sure to include independent variable, dependent variable, control and negative control (if applicable). 5. If leaf disk were placed in two different beakers, one with saltwater (NaCI) solution and the other with sodium bicarbonate solutions (NaCO,) and water. What would be the expected results and why (reflect on the chemical equation for photosynthesis?Explanation / Answer
4) The following experiment is performed to know how the intensity of light determines the rate of photosynthesis. We can use pondweed for this demonstration. The pondweed is placed in a glass jar containing water with essential nutrients. A light source is placed at a certain distance of 10 cm which emits light of certain intensity. Then the pondweed is left undisturbed for some time to get used to this new environment. The number of bubbles given off per minute us then counted. Then the light source is moved to 20 cm and the above steps are repeated again. This process should continue by moving light source 10 cm away from the pondweed at each step till 50 cm. The amount of bubbles formed per minute is calculated at each step.
In this experiment, the independent variable is the light intensity, the dependent variable is number of oxygen bubbles formed per minute which gives the rate of photosynthesis and the controlled variables are the size of pondweed, amount of water and temperature.
