Question
When a charged particle enters a region of uniform magnetic field it follows a circular path, as indicated in the figure.
(a) Is this particle positively or negatively charged?
negativepositive
Explain.
This answer has not been graded yet.
(b) Suppose that the magnetic field has a magnitude of 0.200 T, the particle's speed is 6.0 106 m/s, and the radius of its path is 93.9 cm. Find the mass of the particle, given that its charge has a magnitude of 1.60 1019 C. Give your result in atomic mass units, u, where 1 u = 1.67 1027 kg.
Explanation / Answer
Here ,
a) as the force on the particle is
F = q *( v X B )
as the force on the charge is to the right
hence , the charge is negatively charged
b)
as r = m*v/(B * q)
0.939 = m * 6 *10^6/(1.6 *10^-19 * 0.2)
solving for m
m = 5.01 *10^-27 Kg
the mass of particle is 5.01 *10^-27 Kg
