NEXT P Chapter 05, problem 050 In the figure here three ballot boxes are connected by cords, one of which wraps over a pulley having negligible friction on its axle and negligible mass. The masses are ma 31 g, mB 44 kg, and mc 11 kg. When the assembly is released from rest, (a) what is the tension in the cord connecting B and C, and (b) how far does A move in the first o 300 s (assuming it does not reach the pulley)? Unit (a) Number Unit (b) Number Click if you would like to show work for this question: Open Show WorkExplanation / Answer
Lets consider masses B and C as a single system.
balancing force on this B & C system,
(44 + 11)g - T = (44 + 11)a
55g - T = 55a .... (i)
Now on mass A,
T = 31a .....(ii)
adding (i) and (ii)
55g - 31a = 55a
a = 6.27 m/s^2
Now balancing force on C ,
11g - T = 11a
T = 11 (g - a) = 11 (9.81 - 6.27) = 38.94 N ..............Ans
b) using d = ut + at^2 /2
d = 0 + 6.27 * 0.30 ^2 /2 = 0.28 m
