Question

If liquid water is open to the environment, evaporation can happen at any temperature, with 539 calories being absorbed for every gram of water that evaporates.

One way to keep a can of soda cold on a summer day is to fit it with a thin jacket of material that is soaked in water and covers it on all sides. Consider the can to be a cylinder with a radius of 3 cm and a height of 10 cm. The can and water-soaked jacket have a temperature of 10oC and the surrounding environment has a temperature of 40oC. As a result, there is a net flux of radiation that is absorbed by the system. Assume the emissivity of the system to be 1 and all surfaces of the can are exposed to the environment. Also assume that all of the radiation absorption goes toward evaporating water from the jacket rather than raising the temperature of the can/jacket system.

Find the mass of water that is evaporated in one hour.

ANSWER IS 7.06g

(Just need explanation)

Explanation / Answer

energy absorbed by radiation = Q = e*sigma*A*(T2^4-T1^4)*t

e = emissivity = 1

Area of total surface A = 2*pi*r*l + pi*r^2 + pi*r^2

A = (2*pi*0.03*0.1)+(pi*0.03^2)+(pi*0.03^2) = 0.0245 m^2

sigma = stefans constant = 5.67*10^-8 Wm^2K^-4

time = t = 1 h = 60*60 = 3600s

T1 = 10+273 = 283K

T2 = 273+40 = 313K

Q = 1*5.67*10^-8*0.0245*(313^4-283^4)*3600

Q = 15921.4 J = 3805.30 calories

mass of water eaporated = Q/539 = 7.06 g <<---answer
