3) Portal vein is the main vein of abdomen. It is formed by the union of superior mesenteric vein and splenic vein behind the neck of pancreas. Portal vein drains into porta hepatis of liver. Inferior mesenteric vein drains into splenic vein.

The deoxygenated blood from the pancreas drains into superior mesenteric, splenic and portal veins. Therefore, any pathology in pancreas can easily spread to liver through portal veins. Thus, tumor cells from pancreas can easily spread to pancreas through portal vein.
