Question

A 0.159kg glider is moving to the right on a frictionless, horizontal air track with a speed of 0.870m/s . It has a head-on collision with a 0.303kg glider that is moving to the left with a speed of 2.24m/s . Suppose the collision is elastic.

A: Find the magnitude of the final velocity of the 0.159kg glider.

B: Find the direction of the final velocity of the 0.159kg glider.

C: Find the magnitude of the final velocity of the 0.303kg glider.

D:Find the direction of the final velocity of the 0.303kg glider.

Explanation / Answer

Given that,

m1 = 0.159 kg and u1 = 0.870m/s

m2 = 0.303 kg and u2 = 2.24 m/s

collides elastically. so

(A) final vel of 0.159 kg

v1 = [ u1(m1 - m2) + 2m2u2] / (m1 + m2) Putting values we obtain

v1 = 2.678 m/s

(B) Direction of 0.159 kg will be oppsite now, so its moving to the left with velocity 2.67 m/s

(C)magnitude of the final velocity of the 0.303kg glider

v2 = [u2(m2 - m1) + 2m1u1 ] / (m1 +m2) after putting the values we get

v2 = 1.295 m/s

(D) direction of the final velocity of the 0.303kg glider will be towards left only
