Question
A straight wire 15 m long (the rest of the circuit is not shown here) oriented along the y axis, lies below a compass as shown. The wire is much longer than is shown here and the diagram is not to scale. The compass needle is centered on the origin and is 4 mm above the wire. When a conventional current of / amperes flows through the wire, the compass deflects 8 degree to the west. (a) On the diagram draw the direction of the conventional current / in the wire. (b) What is the magnitude of the magnetic field produced by the wire at the location of the compass? Show your work. tri What is the magnitude of the conventional current I flowing through the wire?Explanation / Answer
a) as the magnetic field is pointing towards west ,
the current in the wire is Towards SOUTH
b)
Let us assume due to earth , B = 0.50 *10^-4 T
now , as Bw = B * sin(8)
Bw = 6.9 *10^-6 T
the magnetic field due to wire is 6.9 *10^-6 T
c)
as due to wire ,
B = u0*I/2*pi*d
6.9 *10^-6 = u0*I/(2*3.141*0.004)
solving for I
I = 0.14 A
the current in the wire is 0.14 A
