Question

The following figure shows a system of four capacitors, where the potential difference across ab is 50.0 V. (Let C1 = 12.0 ?F, C2= 5.5 ?F, C3 = 7.5 ?F, and C4 = 7.0 ?F.)

(a) Find the equivalent capacitance of this system between a and b.

(b) How much charge is stored by this combination of capacitors?

(c) How much charge is stored in each of C1 and C2?

The following figure shows a system of four capacitors, where the potential difference across ab is 50.0 V. (Let C1 = 12.0 ½F, C2= 5.5 ½F, C3 = 7.5 ½F, and C4 = 7.0 ½F.) (a) Find the equivalent capacitance of this system between a and b. (b) How much charge is stored by this combination of capacitors? (c) How much charge is stored in each of C1 and C2?

Explanation / Answer

C23 = C2+C3 = 5.5+7.5 = 13 uF

1/Ceq = 1/C1 + 1/C23 + 1/C4

1/Ceq = (1/12)+(1/13)+(1/7)

Ceq = 3.3 uF

b) U = 0.5*Ceq*V^2 = 0.3*3.3e-6*50*50 = 0.002475 J

c) Qtot = C1= C4 = Ceq*V = 3.3e-6*50 = 165e-6 C <-----answer

V1 = Q1/C1 = 13.75 v

V4 = Q4/C4 = 165/7 = 23.57

V2 = V3 = V - V1+V4 = 12.68

Q2 = C2*V2 = 12.68*5.5e-6 = 69.74 u C
