Question
Elevator-Scale Reading
A) What will a spring scale read for the weight of a 63.9 kg woman in an elevator that moves with constant upward speed of 6.90 m/s? (in kg)
B) What will the scale read if the elevator moves with constant downward speed of 6.90 m/s? (in kg)
C) What will the scale read if the elevator moves with upward acceleration of 0.340g? (in kg)
D) What will the scale read if the elevator moves with downward acceleration 0.340g? (in kg)
E) What will the scale read if the elevator moves in free fall? (in kg)
Explanation / Answer
Without acceleration the woman will weigh, for
a = 63.9kg
b = 63.9kg
c = 53.9 * 1.34 kg =72.226 kg
d = 53.9 * .66kg =35.574 kg
and for d 0 kg because the acceleration of the elevator is equal to the pull of gravity and therefor there is no pull on the spring scale.
e) In freefall, you are allowing gravity to accelerate you downwards at 1g, 1g - 1g = 0g, so the scales read 0Kg
I hope that is all remembered correctly!
