1. Brief summary of Maslow’s hierarchy
Maslow gave a hierarchy of needs and said that each individual must pass through this hierarchy to reach their actual potential or in other words what they are capable of becoming. His hierarchy of needs has five rungs namely, physiological needs, safety and security needs, love and belongingness, esteem needs and finally self-actualization. Maslow said that only after the successful fulfillment of each level of needs the individual goes higher up the rungs. This means that an individual’s physiological needs of hunger, thirst and sex must be fulfilled then only the individual will move on to fulfilling the needs of security and safety, once the individual lives in a safe environment, he/she will get time to think and fulfill his/her needs of love and a feeling of belongingness so on and so forth. The lower two levels of needs are called as D-needs or Deficiency needs and the higher order needs are called as B-needs or Being needs. Once the individual has fulfilled all his deficiency needs will he/she move to cater to the being needs. He has even said that once an individual has fulfilled all his basic needs, then the individual will be able to achieve what he/she is capable of becoming. The individual who has reached the level of self-actualization knows what are his/her true abilities, capabilities and the potential. Only few people reach the higher level of self-actualization.
a. Most Americans have fulfilled their lower order needs and are moving towards esteem needs.
b. Justice, poverty and inequality refers to Maslow's fulfillment of lower order needs, particularly to the safety and security needs.
c. Human relationships belong to the rung of third level of needs, that is, love and belongingness needs. How one relates with fellow beings determines, where and how much he/she will head towards the fulfillment of self-actualization needs.
d. Function and impact of capitalism on Maslow's need hierarchy will be in the form of fulfillment of lower order needs.
e. Education is a part of realization of one's worth. Thus, it falls in the category of fourth level of needs, particularly esteem needs.
f. For being ready about the education of mind, the person's basic needs, namely, physiological, safety and security and love and belongingness and esteem needs must be fulfilled. This means that an individual must have completed the fourth level in order to be ready to accept the challenge of realizing the potential one is having. Educating the mind means training the mind and accepting the fact that an individual has immense potential and is capable of being and becoming the self-actualized individual.
g. An individual who has reached the level of self-actualization must help the people around him to realize their true potential. In fact, these individuals lead the people below them and guide them to reach the higher levels of functioning.
