Question
A turtle is moving in a straight line. It's initial position is X0 = -5 and it is moving away from the origin and slowing down. In this coordinate system, the signs (- or +) of the initial position, initial velocity, and acceleration are?
An object is thrown upwards with a velocity of 30 m/s near the surface of the eart. After 2 s, what would be the direction of the displacement, velocity, and acceleration? (using up or down as direction)
A 2 kg block rests at the edge of a platform that is 10 m above ground level. The block is launched horizontally from the edge of the platform with an initial speed of 3 m/s. The time it will take for the block to reach the ground is most nearly how many s?
Explanation / Answer
a. intial position is -ve (if origin is considered refrence pt and no sign if the intial position itself is considered as refrencepoint)
intial velocity is +ve (becoz its starting and finally it becomes zero as it slows down)
acceleraton is -ve (since the acceleration is differnce of velocity per unit time and final velocity is zero)
b. V= 30 m/s
time taken to reach max heiht Tmax = V/g = 30/9.8 = 3.061 sec
displacement upwards (since it is about to reach max height)
Velocity is upwards
acceleration is downwards ( because the acceleration due to gravity is towards the earth and the ball is thrown upwards)
c. m = 2kg
h = 10m
u =3m/s
v = ?
v^2 - u^2 = 2gh
v^2 - 9 = 2 x 9.8 x 10
v = 14.317m/s
t = v -u /g = 14.317 -3 /9.8 = 1.155s
time taken to reach ground is 1.155s
