Question
An autographed baseball rolls off of a 1.2 m high desk and strikes the floor 0.37 m away from the desk. How fast was it rolling on the desk before it fell off? The acceleration of gravity is 9.81 m/s^2. Answer in units of m/s. A cat chases a mouse across a 1.3 m high table. The mouse steps out of the way, and the cat slides off the table and strikes the floor 1.8 m from the edge of the table. What was the cat?s speed when it slid off the table? The acceleration of gravity is 9.81 m/s^2. Answer in units of m/s.Explanation / Answer
Let horizontal and vertical velocities of the ball be va & vbrespectively
In vertical direction,
The time taken for the ball to reach the ground t is
t=sqrt(2*1.2/9.8) using s = vbt + 0.5*a*t2
t = 0.49 sec.
In horizontal direction, acceleration is 0
using s = vat + 0.5*a*t2
va = 0.37/0.49
therefore it was rolling at 0.75m/s before it fell off the desk.
b) Same as 1st problem
here t= 0.52sec
The cat slid off the table at 3.49m/s
