Question

PLEASE EXPLAIN IN DETAILS

An ice boat (essentially a sled on big skate blades, with a sail) is at rest on the smooth ice surface of a frozen lake. The combined mass of the ice boat and the owner is 150 kg. A sudden burst of wind (called a 'squall') blows directly in the direction the boat is facing. The wind exerts a forward force on the ice boat which starts at zero and increases at a constant rate to a maximum, F_max, over 3.0 s and then drops suddenly back to zero. Consider friction to be negligible. (5 pts)

a) Sketch a force vs. time graph showing the net force on the ice boat.

b) At the end of the squall, as the wind drops back to nothing, the ice boat is moving at 2.0 m/s forward. What was the maximum force exerted by the wind (F_max, the force exerted at 3.0 s just before the wind dropped)?

c) How fast was the boat moving 1.0 s into the squall?

Explanation / Answer

b. V = a*t so a = v/t = 2/3 = 0.66 m/sec ^2

so maximum force is = m*a = 0.66 * 150= 99.99 N

c. v = a*t = 0.66*1 = 0.666 m/sec
