Question
A positive charge q1 is located 3.50 m to the left of a negative charge q2. The charges have different magnitudes. On the line through the charges, the net electric field is zero at a spot 1.00 m to the right of the negative charge. On this line there are also two spots where the total electric potential is zero. Locate these two spots relative to the negative charge.
x=_______ m to the right of the negative charge
x=_______ m to the left of the negative charge

Explanation / Answer
electric field due to positive charge will be towards right, and negative charge will be towards left , since it is given that the point is at right of negative charge.
at that point E=0:
positive charge = q1, negative charge = q2.
E= q/4piE0r2
the point is at a distance of 1 mts from q2
q1/(1+3.5)2 = - q2/12
q1 = - 20.25q2.
potential at any point being at a distance of r from negative charge q2 on right side can be given as =
q1/4piE0(r+3.5) + q2 / 4piE0r
r=0.182 mts.
if the point is located in between the points, then
let the point is at a distance of r mts from q2:
q1/4piE0(3.5-r) +q2/4piE0r =0
r= 0.1647 mts left to negative charge, q2
point left toboth charges having 0 potential is not possible, since r becomes a negative value which never exist
