Question

Take Figure 1 to be a configuration capacitors, where x = C is a capacitance. An ideal battery V is applied across the terminals A, B. Express your answers as fractions in terms of C and V.

What is the charge on the capacitor 2x?

Now take Figure 1 to be a configuration of resistors, where x = R is a resistance. An ideal battery V is applied across the terminals A, B. Express your answers as fractions in terms of R and V.

What is the current in the resistor x?

Thanks in advance for the help! I'm confused and a detailed explanation would be greatly appreciated

Explanation / Answer

so left will be come 3 C

and right will be 7C

combine them

1/3C + 1/7C = 7/21C + 3/21C
so C equivalength = 21 C/10 = 2.1 C

Q = Cequivlant V = 2.1 C V

so Q left = 2.1 C V

so

Q left = C V left

2.1 C V = 3 C Vleft
V left = 0.7 V

so Q 2x = 2 C 0.7 V = 1.4 C V

2)

now combine R and 2 R
1/R + 1/2 R = 3/2R
so Rleft = 2 R/3

now right
1/3R + 1/4R = 7/12 R
so R right = 12 R/7

Rtotal = 2 R/3 + 12R/7 = (14 + 36) R/21 = 50 R /21

so I = V/R = 21 V/50 R

so V left = I Rleft = 21 V/50 R 2 R/3 = 7/25 V

so I = V/R = 7/25 V/R
