Question

at top, PEi exsit. KEi=0

and once crate come down from top, it will have KEf only ! and it will stop at horizontal surface !

so, KEf=Mghi wouldnt it?

i know part a is asking for energy lost due to friction, but there will be KEf still doesnt it?

so i dont get why he say KEf + PEf= 0

PEf is 0 because the crate will be moving with only KEf, but

so why KEf is zero?

A 320-Kg crate at rest at the top of a 15.0-m long (length d)37 inclined ramp slides down and comes to rest on a horizontal surface is not. Calculate the total amount of energy lost due to friction and the coefficient of friction of the horizontal surface.

Explanation / Answer

This is very simple, at the top we know that the object is at rest hence there exists only Potential Energy and Kinetic Energy is Zero.

The question is the total amount of energy lost due to friction. Hence here it is calculated how much energy the object had in the first place. Got it ? So the energy it had in the beginning will be lost when it comes to rest due to friction.

Hence there is only the need to calculate the PE and not KE.

Hope its clear for you.
