Question
Kayoko is flying back to Japan to visit her family. As the plane takes off she's impressed with the force pushing her into the chair and wants to calculate it. Unfortunately she has an aisle seat and can't see out the window so she can't guess her acceleration from looking outside. Instead she takes off her necklace and hangs it in the aisle, noticing the necklace and 0.1 kg diamond on the end makes and angle of 25 degree with respect to the vertical. What is the acceleration of the airplane? If Kayoko has a mass of 50 kg, what is the force that her seat pushes on her?Explanation / Answer
acceleration can be found out by equating the horizontal forves acting on the chain
m * a = T *sin(q)
m = 0.1 kg; q = 25
equating vertical forces; m*g = T*cos(q)
implies T = 1.08 N
this gives a = 4.569 m/sec^2
force on her seat = m * a = 50 * 4.569 = 228.45 N
