Question

Gabriel and Rick are playing air hockey with two pucks. Gabriel's puck has a mass of 0.1 kg and Rick's puck has a mass of 0.12 kg. when the game starts they both send their pucks toward each other, Gabriel's with a speed of 5m/s and Rick's with a speed of 4.8 m/s. The pucks collide and bounce off one another, Gabriel's at angle of 145 and Rick's at an angle of -20 (both measured from the direction of Gabriel's puck's initial velocity). What were speeds of Gabriel and Rick's pucks after the collision ?

Explanation / Answer

initial momentum = 0.076 kgm/s

Final momentum will be same

Let vel of Gabreil puck be g and that of rick be r

So gsin45 = rsin20

r = 2.07g

now gcos45 - rcos20 = 0.076

=> g = -0.06 m/s

r = -0.127 m/s
