The 0.20 kg block moves to the right with a velocity of V0 = 3m/s when a force F is applied. The force varies with time according to the graph shown below. Assume there is friction with coefficient of kinetic friction mu k = 0.25. Determine the velocity the block when the time is S seconds. Do it by (a) applying the concept of I = Delta p, and (b) Apply Newton's second law.

Explanation / Answer

Vo = 3 m/s
friction co efficient = 0.25

The net force= applied force - frictional force
applied force = area under the graph =1/2 * 4 *12 + (1/2 *4*12) =48 N
frictional force= mue * m*g=0.25 * 0.20 *9.8 = 0.49 N

Momentum Impulse theorem

net force *t = m* (v-u)

(48-0.49) * 8 = 0.20 * (v-3)
v=1903 m/s
