Question

Now consider that the boxes are on a floor with friction. When the force of 30 N is applied, the boxes are moving with acceleration of 1.3 m/s2.

f. What is the kinetic coefficient of friction of the floor?

g. Calculate tension on each cord.

Figure 5-26 shows a train of four blocks being pulled across a frictionless floor by force F. What total mass is accelerated to the right by (a) force F. (b) cord 3, and (c) cord 1? (d) Rank the blocks according to their accelerations, greatest first, (e) Rank the cords according to their tension, greatest first.

Explanation / Answer

(a) Mass accelerated to the right by a force F = 10 + 3 + 5 + 2 = 20kg

(b) Mass accelerated to the right by cord 3 = 5 + 3 + 10 = 18kg

(c) Mass accelerated to the right by cord 1 = 10 = 10kg

(d) All the blocks havce the same acceleration

(e) Cord 3 > Cord 2 > Cord 1

(f)Force of friction = (30) - (1.3 X 20) = 4N

kinetic coeffcient of friction = 4 / 20 = 0.2

(g) Tension in cord 3 = 1.3 X (5 + 3 + 10) = 23.4 N

Tension in cord 2 = 1.3 X (3 + 10) = 16.9 N

Tension in cord 1 = 1.3 X (10) = 13 N
