Question
A circular loop in the plane of the paper lies in a 3.0 T magnetic field pointing into the paper. The loop's diameter changes from 100 cm to 60 cm in 0.5 s What is the magnitude of the average induced emf? (Hint the average induced EMF is given by V = - delta theta/delta t where delta theta is the change in flux and delta t the time it took the change to occur) What is the direction of the induced current (clockwise or counter clockwise)? Explain (Hint how is shellacs changing? If the flax is in a certain direction and it decreases, it means that the change is in the opposite direction, the relationship between current and magnetic field generated is given by the right hand rule). If the coil resistance is 0.05 omega, what is the average induced current?Explanation / Answer
a)Change in flux=B*(A2-A1)=3*pi*(0.5^2-0.3^2)=1.508 T m^2
emf=Change in flux/time=1.508/0.5=3.016V
b)The current tries to increase the flux (By lenz's law). Therefore, the current should be clockwise because a clockwise current gives a downward flux
c)I=V/R=3.016/0.05=60.3A
