Introduction: The book “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” is the first in a series of seven books written by J.K. Rowling. The novels follow the life of Harry Potter and his arch nemesis Voldermort. In the Philosopher’s Stone, we read the beginning of Harry’s journey. He is an orphan boy left at the doorstep of his aunt and uncle’s home. His aunt Petunia, Uncle Vernon and cousin Dudley are absolutely terrible to this gangly boy who believes his parents have died in a car crash. It is only when the Dursley’s (Harry’s adoptive family) have to succumb to a humungous man named Hagrid, that they are forced to tell Harry who he really is. It turns out that Hagrid is the grounds-keeper at Hogwarts School of witchcraft and wizardry. It is a school where both his parents met while they studied magic. The rest of Harry’s year is happy and a far cry from his time at the Dursley’s who were always in a terrible mood with him.

Harry makes friends with Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger. Their first adventure in this book ends with them defeating Voldermort temporarily while he is in a feeble state. Harry had to incinerate Voldermort because he is a dangerous dark wizard who not only killed Harry’s parents but also a cohort of other people.

At the climax of the series, (in the 6th and 7th books) we find out that Voldermort has been elongating his life through the use of ‘Horcruxes’. These horcruxes are ordinary objects that contain a part of Voldermort’s soul. We learn in the final book that prolonged proximity to a horcrux, makes an individual feel angry, skittish and full of despair and grim thoughts. We also find out that Harry turned out to be an accidental Horcrux that Voldermort did not intend to make.

Hypothesis: The Dursley’s were always angry and grim with Harry because their attitudes were influenced by the Horcrux in Harry.

Body: Firstly Harry Potter Wikia states that, “Voldemort had made his soul so unstable by the countless murders he committed and through the creation of multiple Horcruxes, that when the Killing Curse rebounded, a piece of it broke off and latched on to the only other living soul in the vicinity; Harry's. Harry was an "unofficial" Horcrux.”

Rowling went on to explain why Vernon and Petunia Dursley hated James and Lily Potter. She said, “James was amused by Vernon, and made the mistake of showing it. Vernon tried to patronise James, asking what car he drove. James described his racing broom.

Vernon supposed out loud that wizards had to live on unemployment benefit. James explained about Gringotts, and the fortune his parents had saved there, in solid gold.

Vernon could not tell whether he was being made fun of or not and grew angry. The evening ended with Vernon and Petunia storming out of the restaurant, while Lily burst into tears and James (a little ashamed of himself) promised to make things up with Vernon at the earliest opportunity.” Furthermore, Petunia was always jealous of her sister Lily for being a witch.

However, these explanations do not count for how their behaviours toward Harry never slipped up even for a single second. There was never a moment of benevolence and never any consideration towards Harry. In fact, there was insurmountable hate. Considering that Harry was a baby when they got him, they could have even raised him to be more like them and not like James and Lily Potter whom they hated. Considering that they expressed hate even towards a one-year-old toddler, it is supportive of the hypothesis.

Conclusion: “Every year on Dudley’s birthday, his parents took him and a friend out for the day, to adventure parks, hamburger restaurants, or the movies. Every year, Harry was left behind with Mrs. Figg, a mad old lady who lived two streets away.” (Source: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone)

This concludes that Harry was always treated with animosity by his relatives. Considering that Harry has spent more time with them since his birth than with any other character in the book, it is only befitting that they are the best example of having an overexposure to a Horcrux. The philosopher’s stone best describes Harry’s origin and that includes his time with his aunt, uncle and cousin brother. All of whom were absolutely awful to him.

It can be assumed from the way the story plays out that, Harry Potter himself has inadvertently influenced the terrible behaviour of his relatives.
