What would you consider the most important variables in effectively helping clients from diverse backgrounds?

Effective helping and interviewing people from different cultures and diverse environment is really important at this age of globalisation to provide support to everyone.

1. Sensitive to the culture of the person counselled is really important because each country, region, locality, culture and religion has their own interpretation of verbal and nonverbal cues. So understanding how the counselor's actions are perceived in the cultural eyes of the person counselled will remain a tough challenge in counseling multicultural and diverse clients.

2. Gender - In most of the cultures around the world there is a difference in treating male and female clients. So a counselor needs to be aware of the implications and ways to approach and counsel different genders.

3. Making one approachable - The counselor needs to be approachable in order to make the clients from different cultures feel at home. Counseling will be effective if the counselor is able to build confidentiality.

4. Continuous Assistance - Clients from different backgrounds take time to understand the new environment and culture as they will be in a cultural shock. So, it is necessary to provide continuous Assistance.

5. Self development - The counselor will be a fish out of water if he/she doesn't learn the minute aspects of the life style of the person counselled. So the counselor needs learn continuously to update the clients about the changes that is taking place in their own cultures.
