Question
1-
What is the magnitude of the upward acceleration of the load of bricks?
2-
What is the tension in the rope while the load is moving?
A load of bricks with mass m1 = 15.4kg hangs from one end of a rope that passes over a small, frictionless pulley. A counterweight of mass m2 = 27.8kg is suspended from the other end of the rope, as shown in the figure. (Figure 1) The system is released from rest. Use g = 9.80m/s2 for the magnitude of the acceleration due to gravity. 1- What is the magnitude of the upward acceleration of the load of bricks? 2- What is the tension in the rope while the load is moving?Explanation / Answer
Newton's second law: F=ma (summed).
--> (27.8-15.4)*9.80 = (27.8+15.4)*accel
-->accel = 2.813 m/s^2
Tension_Left = Tension_Right = 27.8*(9.80-2.813) = 194.24 N
Notice that the items are moving, so it's not the same as static tension.
