How come despite spending billions of dollars pharmaceutical companies are not able to find 'the magic bullet' to cure mental disorders?

(Note: your response must focus only on the biological/anatomical/physiological aspects. Any response that is based on social/economic factors will not be accepted. In the past some students focused on expressing views on how evil the pharmaceutical companies are and they deliberately refuse to find the magic bullet because it is not in their economic interest. Explanation / Answer

Mental disorders also called mental illness/psychiatric disorders, where behavioural pattern [ emotion, thinking and sometimes boths] gets affected. It affects functioning in social, work or families activities.Mental disorders take many forms (mild to severe), wherein most of the cases you would know the cause but many times we will not know the cause. The most common type is;

Autism: Development Disorder; Obsessive Compulsive Disorder ( excessive thoughts); Bipolar (Mood Swings from depressive to manic); schizophrenia ( ability to think, feel & behave); Clinical depression; anxiety disorder; Dementia ( a group of thinking and social symptoms that interferes with daily functioning).

Treatment varies from disorder to disorder but almost involves psychiatric counselling. Sometimes medication may be prescribed. But it's difficult to treat someone with medication as the often have a significant and distressing effect. These effects can be physical and include fatigue, vision issue, headaches etc. In many cases, these side effects are sufficient and significant enough to stop the medication.
