Question

The OB unit has 5 registered nurse openings over all 3 shifts and there is a new directive that you cannot hire nurses with more than 2 years of experience. You need to decide if you are willing to take new graduates into the OB unit, which until now has not been the rule. The supervising nurse manager is nervous about all of the staff openings in the entire hospital and calls a meeting. He asks for solutions, but you cannot close beds. Describe the steps in your course of action. Create at least 5 alternative actions for meeting the directive. If you need to hire new graduates, what is your plan for their orientation and socialization? What type of employee would you look for in your search for staff?

Explanation / Answer

The alternative actions for meeting the directive include communicating the need for recruitment of new graduates into the OB unit both vertically and horizontally.

Identifying the barriers in the way of implementing such a policy

Identifying the cost benefits of recruiting new graduates into the OB unit as the new graduates will charge less.

Brainstorming the issue with the selection committee

If I need to hire new graduates, my plan for their orientation and socialization will include making the fresh graduates aware of the challenges, risks involved in the job. Communicating with them about the different ways they can improve their Nursing and care better; such as by better communication with the patient.

The type of employee I would look for in my search for staff are; responsible, skilled, having good communication skills and work ethics.
