Question
What angle Does Tom cruise need to surivive the Jump between building and the window:
If unfamilar here is the video of that scence: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xc0hpVuBves
Esentially Cruise created a pendulum to jump from the building to the window. What is the angle he created that would sucessfully allow him to jump and survive?
the rope was 15m
he needed to go 3m to the right and 3m down
the openeing of the windoe is approximetly 2m
Please show work! Even a way to just set it up or a formula to use would be great
Explanation / Answer
let theta be the angle he created
So the velocity when he left rope can be found from conservation of energy:
mgh(1- cos(theta)) = .5mv^2
now first we need v to reach the required destination will be:
v *t = 3
also,
vertical safe distance will be 4 m.
4 = .5gt^2
replace t from above equation we get v as
v = 11.025 m/sec
put this in first equation you get theta.
theta = 54.08 degree
