Question
You are standing on a sheet of ice that covers the baseball stadium parking lot in Detroit; there is negligible friction between your feet and the ice. A friend throws you a 0.430kg baseball that is traveling horizontally at 8.50m/s . Your mass is 70.5kg .
a) If you catch the baseball, with what speed do you and the baseball move afterwards?
v = ____ cm/s
b) If the baseball hits you and bounces off your stomach, so that afterwards it is moving horizontally at 8.30m/s in the opposite direction, what is your speed after the collision?
v = ____ cm/s
Please show all work with the answers so I can understand. Thanks! :) :)
Explanation / Answer
a) using momentum conservation,
0.430 x 8.50 + 70.5 x 0 = (0.430 + 70.5)v
v = 0.0515 m/s = 5.15 cm/s
b) 0.430 x 8.50 + 70.5 x 0 = 70.5v + 0.430 x (-8.30)
v = 0.1025 m/s = 10.25 cm/s
