Question

In the above figure, a ray of light is incident upon theinterface between two media having indices of refractionn1 = 1.2 and n2 = ???. The known angles aref2 = 60 and f3 = 34. (Note that the angles in the diagram may not be accurate.) What is the speed of light in the second medium?

In the above figure, a ray of light is incident upon theinterface between two media having indices of refractionn1 = 1.2 and n2 = ???. The known angles aref2 = 60½ and f3 = 34½. (Note that the angles in the diagram may not be accurate.) What is the speed of light in the second medium?

Explanation / Answer

Refractive index of medium 2 wrt medium 1 = sini/sinr

i = 90 - 34 = 56 degrees
r = 90 - 60 = 30 degrees

sini/sinr = 0.82/0.5 = 1.66

n2/n1 = 1.66 or n2 = 1.66*1.2 = 1.99

n2 = c/v
or v =c/n2 where c is velocity of loght in vaccum = 3*108 m/s

n2 = 1.5 * 108 m/s

Ans 1.5 * 108 m/s
