Question

Two capacitors are connected to an AC source as shown in the figure. Assume VAC = Vmax sin(2pi f t), with Vmax = 13 V and f = 2028 Hz.

- The image just shows what it looks like.

What is the (peak value) of the current through the capacitors?

=____A

What is the rms current?

=____A

Explanation / Answer

Ceq= (2*1)/(2+1) = 2/3

Current through Ceq is given by i = 1/Ceq * dVac/dt

i= 3/2 * Vmax * Cos ( 2Pi*f*t) * 2Pi*f

= 3/2*13*2*Pi*2028 Cos( 2Pift)

therefore peak value is Ip= 3*13*Pi*2028 = 248474.8461 A

Irms= Ip* sqrt(2) = 351396.4972
