Question

PreviewFile Edit View Go Tools Window Help Screen Shot 2017-12-05 at 3.44.41 PM Q Search Alternate class exercise: November 30, 2017 The three positions we've seen regarding a right to health care are (roughly): 1. The Daniels Policy: All citizens are guaranteed a certain basic range of medical services, designed to ensure that everyone has equal opportunity to participate in society 2. The Buchanan Policy: Society should provide some basic health care to citizens, not as a right, but because it increases over-all well being (we're all healthier if we all get vaccines, for example) and because keeping citizens healthy also keep the economy healthier (consider that cloes to 80% of bankruptcies in the US occur due to health problems, we have good reasons to want most people to be healthy most of the time, so we should provide access to health care that serves that end 3. The Engelhardt Policy: People have no right to health care at all. It may be unfortunate that some need care they cannot afford, but unfortunate does not equate with unjust. Taxing everyone to provide health care for thoe who need it, however, is unjust, so the governmnet has no right to do it, even if it does increase utility over-all. Imagine that you are on the President's Commission on Bioethics (yes, this is an actual position!) and have been asked to advise Congress and the President on the best policy for the US regarding providing health care for citizens. Which of these three positions would you argue for? What reasons would you give for that position? What reasons lead you to reject the other positions? Finally, what do you think would be the strongest argument against the position you support? What sorts of political attack ads could be written against you? ya

Explanation / Answer

The Buchanan policy is the better policy and if I am on the President 's Commission on Bioethics i would surely prefer this policy. The second policy mentioned clearly sounds that medical services be made mandatory to all groups of people. This policy seems to be more people friendly and tries to ensure that the health of the people are in check. This policy also support the economy of the country whereas the other two policies guarantees medical services in a limited way and doesnot offer much help to the people.

Since everything this policy seems to be more people friendly some people wouldn't care much about their health. And people fo not pay service tax directly for health care so ot can affect the economy. This will be formulted as an issue by the people opposing this policy.
