Question

Two packing crates of masses m1 = 10.0 kg and m2 = 4.60 kg are connected by a light string that passes over a frictionless pulley as in the figure. The 4.60-kg crate lies on a smooth incline of angle 41.0

(a) Find the acceleration of the 4.60-kg crate.
m/s2 (up the incline)

(b) Find the tension in the string.
N

Explanation / Answer

The sum of forces for the hanging mass...

mg - T = ma

(10)(9.8) - T = 10a

T = 98 - 10a

For the mass on the incline

T - mgsin(angle) = ma

T = (4.6)(9.8)(sin 41) + (4.6a)

T = 29.6 + 4.6a

Set the T's equal...

98 - 10a = 29.6 + 4.6a

a = 4.68 m/s

Part B)

T = 98 - 10(4.68)

T = 51.2 N
