Question

Now you will consider the more general case of a projectile fired at an angle. Imagine you throw a ball off of a cliff at an angle of 35 degree above the horizontal. At the highest point in its motion the ball has a speed of 3 m/s. Ignore air resistance for the following questions. a) Determine the initial speed of the ball, vo. B) If the hall lands a horizontal distance away from you of d = 6 m, how high is the cliff, h? c) If there was a 10 m high wall 4 m away from you horizontally, would a ball thrown in the same manner as in part a) make it over the wall?

Explanation / Answer

at highest point Vox = Vo*costheta = 3

Vo = 3/cos35 = 3.66 m/s

T = d/Vox = 6/3 = 2s

h = Voy*T - 0.5*g*T^2

h = (3.66*sin35*2)-(0.5*9.8*2*2) = -15 .4 m

height = 15.4 m
