Question
An electron has an initial velocity of 66893 m/s in the x direction. It enters a uniform electric field E = (400 N/C) j, which is in the y direction.
(a) Find the acceleration of the electron.
( ) m/s2j ?
(b) How long does it take for the electron to travel 10 cm in the x direction in the field?
( ) micro second ?
(c) By how much and in what direction is the electron deflected after traveling 10 cm in the x direction in the field?
( ) m ?
(Hint: In this case, the electric force is the only force. Gravity is small enough to be ignored. However, the calculations are similar to an object that is subject only to gravity.)
Explanation / Answer
(a)the acceleration of the electron.is = q*E/mass of electron=-(1.6*10-19)*400/(9.11*10-31)
=(-)7*1013 m/s2j.
(b)Since no force in x direction
So time taken to travel 10 cm in x direction ,= 0.1/66893
then time comes =1.49 microseconds
(c)After travelling 10 cm in x direction=
it gets deflected in (-) direction due to force in -y direction
Deflection = ut + 1/2a t ^2
=0 - 1/2*7*1013*(1.49*10-6)2
=(-)78m j
it gets deflected in negative y direction at distance 78m
