Question
Stacey Petersen is the admitting clerk at a large urban hospital. The patients served come from a wide variety of cultural and economic backgrounds. Much of Stacey’s work involves collecting and entering patient data into the hospital’s computer system. Although most patients are comfortable with this procedure, some find it intimidating or are uneasy about “just what is being put into the computer.” Of particular concern to Stacey are elderly patients from cultures in which health care is very personalized and where practitioners are well known to the patient.
What can Stacey do to help these patients feel more at ease?
How can a lack of understanding on the part of patients about the health care system affect the way they deal with health problems?
Explanation / Answer
1.Communication of staff with patients in hospitals plays a major role as it will have a greater impact on personal and health related issues. In order to ease patients Stacey should make sit comfortably first ,speak about the purpose why they came to the hospital, slowly gain trust,be free and honest enough to explain them the procedure of the hospital and then ask about the personal details.Highest priority should be given to the patients morals and cultural behaviours. He should ensure that the information is confidential and will not be discussed anywhere else as it is the basic privacy rules .
2.In recent days most of the population have an idea about the healthcare systems except people living in rural areas and old aged people.Training camps should be held in rural areas to create awareness of the healthcare systems, giving free treatment sometimes by visiting their places also help in gaining knowledge by the people.Old aged people should be clearly explained about how to deal with the health problems by their family members and also it helps in spending sometime with them which makes them satisfied.
