Question

Two point charges, Q1 = 3.5 microC and Q2 = -1.6 microC , are placed on the x axis. Suppose that Q2 is placed at the origin, and Q1 is placed at the coordinate x1 = -5.0cm

A) Two point charges, Q1 = 3.5?C and Q2 = -1.6?C ,are placed on the x axis. Suppose that Q2 is placed at the origin, and Q1 is placed at the coordinatex1 = ? 5.0cm

B) At what point(s) along the x axis is the potential zero? Determine the x-coordinate(s) of the point(s).

Express your answer using two significant figures. If there is more than one answer, enter your answers in ascending order separated by commas.

Explanation / Answer

here, |Q2|<|Q1|

so the point where Vnet is zero is close to Q1 and it is right to Q1.

let at x distance from Q2 Vnet is zero.

Vnet = 0

V1 + V2 = 0

V1 = V2

k*Q1/(5-x) = k*Q2/x

3.5/(5-x) = 1.6/x

3.5*x = 8 - 1.6*x

3.5*x + 1.6*x = 8

==> x = 8/(3.5+1.6)

= 1.57 cm

so, at x = -1.57 cm   Vnet = 0
