He had become confused, developed slurred speech, and had difficulty walking after having only one beer to drink. In the ER he was noted to have cephalalgia, vomiting, dyspnea, and was disoriented. Upon examination, needle marks were found on his arms and stomach. The physician ordered a blood sugar test that revealed hyperglycemia. Unknown to his friends, this young man has had diabetes mellitus since early childhood. The patient quickly recovered following an insulin injection.

1. What pathological condition has this patient had since childhood? Look this condition up in a reference source and include a short description of it?
ANS: The patient in this case study has had diabetes mellitus since early childhood. People diagnosed with diabetes either have type one, type two, or gestational. No matter what type of diabetes one may have, it all effects glucose production throughout the body. Diabetes cripples the body by not allowing it to create either too much, or not enough insulin. Insufficient insulin throughout the body can cause kidney and nerve damage, along with blindness (WebMD, 2016).

2. List and define each symptom noted in the ER in your own words.
ANS: The patient was described to have a rapid pulse rate; this is due from the lack of insulin in his body. The case study also noted he had diaphoresis which caused him to become confused and lost.

3. What diagnostic test was performed? Describe it in your own words.
ANS: The doctor ordered a blood test to be preformed. This would advise the doctors what his glucose and blood plasma levels were to better diagnose him.

4. Explain the results of the test.
ANS: The doctors diagnosed the patient with ketoacidosis and hyperglycemia. Hyperglycemia is a common cause due to diabetes because of the excess sugars in the body. Because his body is not receiving enough insulin, ketoacidosis has become an issue, disallowing the body to break down fat cells.

5. What specific type of diabetes does this young man probably have? justify your answer.
ANS: This patient has type II diabetes. What lead me to believe this was the development of hyperglycemia and ketoacidosis. These two diagnoses are the most common upon type II patients. Also taking into consideration the high glucose levels and the patient having the

disease since a young age makes it even more apparent that he suffers from type II diabetes.
