Question Consider the circuit in the figure below, in which V = 6 V, and the switch has been in position a for a long time. The switch is changed to position b at t = 0 s. What are the charge Q on the capacitor and the current I through the resistor at the times tabulated below?

time Q ( Question Consider the circuit in the figure below, in which V = 6 V, and the switch has been in position a for a long time. The switch is changed to position b at t = 0 s. What are the charge Q on the capacitor and the current I through the resistor at the times tabulated below? (a) What is the time constant ? for this circuit? Need Help! Detailed answers please! I want to understand how to figure this out!

Explanation / Answer

Answer:

Given: V = 6 v,

R = 50 ohm

C = 2 microF

b) Values of Q (microC) and I (mA) immediately after the switch is closed

Charge (Q) on the capacitor = C * V

= 2 microF * 6 v

=12  microC

Current (I) through the resistor = V /R

= 6 v/ 50 ohm

= 0.12 A = 120 mA

(c) At any time say, t

I1 = I * 1/e = 120 mA * 0.368 = 44.16 mA

Q1 = C * R* I1 = 2*50*44.16/1000) = 4.416 microC

(d) At t = 200 microsec.
I2 = I*e^-(200/100) = 1/e2 = 0.135*120 = 16.25 mA

Q2 = C*R*I2 = 2*50*16.25/1000) = 1.625 microC
